🧭 Overview
From July 19 to July 28, 2024, Dr. Michele Salis (CNR-IBE, Italy) carried out a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at the University of Lisbon and ANEPC, within the framework of the NERO COST Action. The objective was to gain operational knowledge in real-time wildfire monitoring using decision-support platforms, enhancing his research-driven perspective with field-based applications.
📋 Key Activities & Insights
- Embedded in ANEPC’s NAD-AIR wildfire decision support unit.
- Trained on the FEB Monitorização platform for real-time wildfire monitoring.
- Assisted in the analysis of two live wildfire events, including Alcabideche-Cascais.
- Mapped fire progression and derived key metrics (e.g., rate of spread, area burned).
- Collected environmental and operational data for case reconstruction.
- Drafted a comprehensive report linking behavior patterns to fire management decisions.
- Built strategic bulletins based on real-time inputs from the field and weather services.
💭 Relevance & Reflections
This mission provided Michele with a first-hand view of civil protection workflows and real-time fire analysis systems, bridging the gap between research and operations. It opened pathways for deeper collaboration between Portuguese and Italian wildfire institutions. The insights gained will support transnational integration of data-driven fire behavior assessment and help build more resilient response frameworks across Southern Europe. Michele intends to transfer this knowledge to Sardinian and national stakeholders in Italy.
