This document comprises Deliverable D2.1 (“Case Study Manual”) of the COST Action NERO, CA22164. The overarching objective of the NERO Case Study Manual (CSM) is to lay the groundwork for the systematic analysis of past wildfire events, using established methods and tools while encouraging the integration of new techniques. The manual introduces guiding principles that should be considered in the design and implementation of high-quality wildfire case studies while recognizing that some flexibility is needed to accommodate the unique characteristics of each event.

This document represents a storytelling-formatted protocol proposed to be used for communicating information related to the spread and behavior of past wildfire events. It includes sections providing information related to fire progression, fire behavior and environmental drivers, impacts, and lessons learned. The aim of the NERO storytelling template is to consolidate presentation of past wildfire events across Europe, enabling straightforward comparisons between different events and effective outreach of the facts related to the occurrence of extreme fire behavior.

Also known as the Science Communication Plan, this document defines the strategy of effective communication and outreach to amplify the impact of the Action outcomes.
