Monday, December 16 2024 @ 10:0012:00 CET

🌟 Join Us for the Next NERO Network Café Webinar! 🌟

On December 16, 2023, at 10:00 AM CET, we invite you to an engaging session focused on fuel characteristics and their role in fire behavior, with a special emphasis on extreme fire events.

This edition of the NERO Network Café will feature two distinguished speakers:

🔥 Paulo Fernandes, Associate Professor at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal. Paulo has over 30 years of experience in fire behavior, ecology, and management, focusing on prescribed burning for hazard reduction. He has contributed to significant global reports such as UNEP’s “Spreading like Wildfire” and “State of Wildfires 2023-2024.” His research interests include the interaction between fuel, vegetation, and weather in determining fire behavior and its effects. National agencies and practitioners have widely adopted Paulo’s work.

🔥 Jose Luis Soriano, Forestry Technical Engineer with a background in Environmental Sciences, GIS, and Fire Management. Jose Luis is the Head of the Fire Analysis Unit at Generalitat Valenciana, Spain, with extensive experience in wildfire analysis, training, and international collaboration. He has participated in various wildfire management projects, including those in Guatemala and Spain, and has numerous publications. His presentation will focus on monitoring fuel moisture and its relation to fire behavior, which was developed in collaboration with a university.

Agenda:

  1. Introduction by the Moderator – Context and Overview of the NERO Project (10 minutes)
  2. Presentation by Paulo Fernandes – “Effects of Structural Fuel Characteristics on Fire Behaviour” (30 minutes)
    Topics to be covered:
    • What do we know about fuel type-fire behavior relationships?
    • The Role of fuels in extreme fire behavior
  1. Presentation by Jose Luis Soriano “Monitoring Fuel Moisture: Data, Uses, and Collaborative Modelling Projects” (30 minutes)
    Topics to be covered:
    • History of the Fuel Moisture Monitoring Project
    • Data obtained and its applications
    • Collaborative modeling project with the University
  1. Q&A Session (30 minutes)

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights, connect with experts, and participate in a dynamic Q&A session on bridging science and practice in wildfire management.
